What is no-fines concrete?
No-fines concrete diverges from traditional concrete by omitting sand or “fine aggregates”. Its composition is fundamentally simpler, consisting of coarse aggregate, cement, and water. This unique formulation results in a material with distinct properties that set it apart.
For example, the absence of finer particles creates concrete with a porous structure, characterised by numerous air voids. These voids significantly influence the material’s behaviour and applications. Hence, it is sometimes called Porous Concrete, Pervious Concrete or Permeable Concrete.
Primarily composed of coarse aggregate between 10mm and 20mm in size, no-fines concrete exhibits a density range from as low as 300 kg/m³ when using lightweight aggregates to a typical range of 1600 to 1900 kg/m³ for standard aggregates. Its compressive strength generally falls between 4 MPa and 14 MPa.
What are the ideal mix proportions for no-fines concrete?
The ratio of aggregate to cement in no-fines concrete typically varies from 6:1 to 10:1, a significantly higher proportion of aggregate compared to traditional concrete. The water-cement ratio is critical and falls within a narrow range of 0.38 to 0.52.
Unlike traditional concrete, where strength is primarily determined by the water-cement ratio, the strength of no-fines concrete is influenced by factors including the aggregate-cement ratio and overall density. Achieving the correct balance is essential for optimal performance.
The consistency of no-fines concrete differs from traditional concrete, lacking standardised measurement methods like the slump test. Determining the appropriate water-cement ratio often relies on the experience of the engineer, requiring careful visual assessment and trial and error.
Due to its composition, no-fines concrete can be compacted using simple tools like a wacker plate or a tamping rod. This characteristic also lessens the load on formwork, allowing for earlier removal. However, its low adhesive strength limits its use with reinforcement, necessitating special considerations if reinforcement is required.
