Our sustainable concrete waste disposal practices explained
The roar of construction and the satisfying thud of concrete being laid are familiar sounds across the UK, symbolising progress and development. Yet, behind every successful project lies a significant challenge: construction waste. As a business, we’re deeply committed to sustainable practices, particularly when it comes to managing the waste generated by the very materials we supply.
This post will delve into the environmental impact of construction rubble, explain how our team offers a superior alternative to traditional skip hire, and introduce our cutting-edge wash plant – a testament to our dedication to sustainable concrete waste disposal and a greener future.
The challenges and environmental impact of construction waste
The UK construction industry is a major contributor to the nation’s economy, but it also generates a staggering amount of waste. A significant portion of this is concrete, brick and other inert rubble. Traditionally, much of this material ends up in landfills. The environmental implications of this are far-reaching and concerning. In this section, we’ll list some of these:
Landfill depletion
Our planet has finite space, and landfills are rapidly filling up. Disposing of valuable, reusable materials in this way is simply an inefficient use of resources and contributes to a growing waste crisis.
Resource depletion
Every tonne of virgin aggregate extracted for new construction projects puts a strain on natural resources. By discarding usable materials, we increase the demand for new extractions, leading to needless habitat destruction and landscape degradation.
Pollution risks
Although concrete is relatively benign, mixed construction and demolition waste can contain harmful substances that, if not properly managed, can leach into the soil and groundwater, posing risks to ecosystems and human health.
Why opt to use our grab hire service instead of a skip?
For many construction projects, particularly those involving residential renovations or smaller commercial developments, the go-to solution for concrete waste disposal has traditionally been skip hire. While skips offer a convenient way to contain waste on-site, they often come with hidden costs and inefficiencies.
Our grab hire service comes with a vast swathe of benefits. Here we’ll explore the reasons why this service stands out as a more efficient and cost-effective solution.
Cost savings
Skip hire often involves multiple skips for larger projects, each incurring rental fees, as well as delivery and collection charges. Our grab hire service can clear a significant volume of waste, approximately two skips’ worth of material, in a single visit, cutting overall costs.
Time efficiency
Loading a skip manually can be a laborious and time-consuming process. Our grab wagons feature an impressive reach of up to eight metres and can therefore clear a site in a fraction of the time. This frees up yourself or your workforce so that other tasks can be prioritised and deadlines can be maintained.
Accessibility
Skips naturally require space for placement and often obstruct driveways or public areas as a result. Our grab wagons are agile and can often access tighter spaces, making them ideal for urban environments or projects with limited access. As mentioned above, the excellent reach of our vehicles’ grab arms enables the collection of waste from hard-to-reach spots.
No permit hassle
Placing skips on public roads often requires permits from local councils, adding to administrative burdens and potential delays. With our grab hire service, the waste is loaded directly onto our vehicle, eliminating the need for such permits in most cases.
Better site safety
Removing large piles of rubble promptly vastly improves site safety by reducing trip hazards and creating a clearer, more organised working environment for everyone.
Our commitment to recycling
Our dedication to environmental responsibility goes beyond just efficient waste collection – it’s ingrained in our business model. We firmly believe that waste concrete is not waste at all, but rather a valuable resource. Our commitment to recycling is a cornerstone of our operations, aiming to minimise our environmental footprint and promote a circular economy within the construction sector.
We actively process waste to transform it into reusable materials. This proactive approach significantly reduces the amount of construction rubble sent to landfills, conserving natural resources and mitigating the environmental impact associated with new aggregate extraction. Our investment in advanced recycling technology, specifically our cutting-edge wash plant, is a testament to this unwavering commitment.
The aggregate washing plant process
The heart of our sustainable concrete waste disposal practices lies within our aggregate washing plant. With a commitment to minimising the volume of construction waste going to landfills, our wash plant, along with our crushing processes, allows us to produce high-quality washed aggregates in a variety of sizes from waste materials.
The waste is collected using our grab hire wagon, which is then tipped off in our Birtley yard. Here, waste concrete materials are screened down to 50mm, and all hardcore is crushed. The 50mm pieces (with organics) then go into our wash plant, where they are thoroughly washed. From this process, we produce clean 10mm gravel, 20mm gravel, and sand.
Furthermore, we take our commitment to recycling a step further by using this recycled concrete to make our strong, interlocking concrete blocks. Thanks to our wash plant, this comprehensive process contributes significantly to a circular economy and actively reduces the need for excess natural resources to be blasted, excavated, and transported from quarries.
The benefits of sustainable concrete waste disposal for residential and commercial clients
Embracing sustainable concrete waste disposal practices with Titan Concrete offers a multitude of benefits for both residential and commercial clients. Let’s explore some of these in more detail:
Environmental stewardship
By working with Titan Concrete, you directly contribute to reducing landfill waste, conserving natural resources, and lowering carbon emissions. This enhances your environmental credentials and demonstrates a commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) for commercial clients.
Cost-effectiveness
As highlighted previously, our grab hire service often proves more economical than traditional skip hire, leading to direct savings on your project budget. Moreover, using recycled aggregates can sometimes be more cost-effective than virgin materials, depending on market conditions.
Compliance and reputation
For commercial clients, demonstrating sustainable waste management practices can help meet regulatory requirements and boost your company’s reputation as an environmentally conscious organisation, which can be a significant advantage in tendering for new projects.
Resource efficiency
By diverting waste from landfills and transforming it into reusable aggregates, you are actively participating in a circular economy, promoting resource efficiency and reducing reliance on finite natural resources.
